African Immigrant Community Shows Unity After Historic New York Mayoral Election: By Sheikh Musa Drammeh

In one of the most defining moments for New York’s African immigrant community, the recent mayoral election tested both our political maturity and our sense of solidarity. For many of us, this campaign represented a profound moral and emotional crossroads a contest between loyalty and aspiration, between heritage and hope.

On one side stood Mayor Eric Adams, an incumbent who has done more than any of his predecessors to include Africans in positions of leadership within City Hall. His deep ancestral connection to the continent and his commitment to African voices in governance have made him a figure of enduring pride within our community. Mayor Adams, to us, remains one of our own regardless of the office he holds or the challenges he faces. Our support for him has never wavered, and it never will.

Yet this election also brought forth a remarkable challenger Zohran K. Mamdani, a young, dynamic, and African-born candidate whose passion for the continent and vision for the city inspired many. His candidacy energized a new generation of African immigrants and presented a new model of political engagement for our community.

This duality between two figures we deeply respect could have easily divided us. But instead, it revealed the strength of our collective character. Guided by discipline, respect, and unity, African New Yorkers managed our differences as one family. We debated ideas without hostility and supported our preferred candidates without fracturing our shared identity.

“I am so proud of our maturity and civility in handling this challenge superbly as we should as intellectuals,” said community leader Sheikh Musa Drammeh. “We’ve made the city stronger and our continent proud.”

With the results now clear Zohran K. Mamdani has been overwhelmingly elected as the next mayor of New York City our path forward must be one of cooperation and accountability. As the mayor-elect begins assembling his administration, our community must remain engaged, ensuring that the progress made under Mayor Adams continues and expands.

Regardless of individual preferences during the campaign, it is now time to rally behind the city’s new leadership. We must support Mayor-elect Mamdani in achieving his promises and stand ready to hold him accountable should he fall short.

Our unity, discipline, and civic maturity have become an example for others. Let us continue in that spirit with love, respect, and unwavering pride in our African identity.
